How the NPL standings work

  • Each team plays 7 league matches, one against every other team.
  • A win is worth 2 points in standard T20 league play; a no result splits the points. Check the official tournament rules for tied matches decided by a Super Over.
  • Teams level on points are separated by net run rate.
  • The top four go through to the playoffs on 17–21 November.

Net run rate in the NPL points table

In the NPL standings, net run rate is a team's scoring rate minus the scoring rate it concedes, over the whole season. A team that scores 1,100 runs in 140 overs (7.86 an over) and concedes 1,000 runs in 140 overs (7.14) has an NRR of +0.71. In a seven-match league, NRR often decides the fourth playoff place: in 2025 Lumbini Lions finished fourth and went on to win the title.

ExampleRuns for / oversRuns against / oversNRR
Team A1,100 / 1401,000 / 140+0.71
Team B980 / 1361,050 / 140−0.29

When a team is bowled out, the full 20 overs count for its overs faced, which is why heavy collapses hurt NRR so much.

How many wins to make the playoffs

With seven league matches each, a team on five wins (10 points) is almost certain of a top-four place. Four wins (8 points) usually leaves the team in a group decided on net run rate. Three wins or fewer needs other results to fall the right way.

League winsPointsTypical outcome in an 8-team, 7-game league
6–712–14Top two, Qualifier 1
510Top four, often top two
48In the fight for third or fourth on NRR
36Outside chance
0–20–4Out

These are typical outcomes, not rules; the final NPL standings depend on how results spread across all eight teams.

From the points table to the final

FinishRoute
1st or 2ndQualifier 1 (17 Nov). Winner to the final; loser gets another chance in Qualifier 2.
3rd or 4thEliminator (18 Nov). Winner to Qualifier 2 (19 Nov); loser is out.
5th–8thSeason over.

Finishing in the top two of the NPL standings is worth a second life. Fourth place is enough to win the title, as Lumbini showed in 2025, but it takes three straight knockout wins.

NPL standings in previous seasons

The NPL points table has decided two seasons so far. In 2024 Janakpur Bolts won the title; in 2025 Lumbini Lions did after finishing fourth. Sudurpaschim Royals reached both finals and lost both. Full results are on the NPL winners page, and the season's fixtures by team are on the NPL schedule.
